Okay, so these are some things that I have either picked up from different places, saw happen to other RPG's, or things that actually screwed up on my own RPG's. This will definitely not cover everything, and people have different opinions on things, but it should give you a start if you are new to this kind of thing.
1) Make a good, matching, cool skin for your site. Once you make the skin, you can match the photos you make (or have other people make) up with your skin so it all matches!
(To take a screenshot of the page you are viewing, hit the Prt Scr Sys Rq button *usually somewhere around the insert, delete, home, end, etc. keys* then go somewhere like paint and paste, then save)
2) Do not use bright colors! Bright colors hurt peoples eyes, and many times make people go and find a different site to join. I know that I about joined an RPG one time, but every time I went to the page I was blinded by the bright colors!
3) Get at least half decent pictures. If you can't make pictures all to well, request one! There is no shame in that! Members will be more likely to stay if there is nice photos to look at every time they log on.
4) Create good rules, but not to many! List them all, but keep them to the point. Give short explanations on things that might be confusing to some new members. If they really do not understand, they can PM you or another member and ask them. Many members will not read all the rules if they are to long!
5) Have a good, unique, plot. Try to avoid the classic Light v. Dark wild horse rpg's at the moment. If you really want that kind of RPG, then add a twist. Something to set your site apart. Something to get members to want to join your RPG over the other ones, and not just because they came to yours first.
